Creating Gift Cards

Creating gift cards in bulk is the core feature of the Datora Bulk Gift Cards app. Instead of creating gift cards one by one in the Shopify admin, you can generate hundreds or thousands of gift cards with a single job.

Creating a Job​

To create a new gift card job, navigate to the app dashboard and click Create Job. You will be presented with a form to configure all aspects of your gift card batch.

Required Settings​

Quantity

  • The number of gift cards to create in this job
  • Minimum: 1
  • Maximum depends on your plan:
    • Free: 50
    • Basic: 750
    • Premium: 7,500
    • Ultimate: Unlimited

Value

  • The monetary value of each gift card
  • Uses your shop's default currency
  • All cards in the batch will have the same value

Optional Settings​

Prefix

  • Up to 4 characters added to the beginning of each gift card code
  • Useful for branding or categorizing batches
  • Example: Prefix GIFT produces codes like GIFT-ABCD1234EFGH5678

Suffix (Postfix)

  • Up to 4 characters added to the end of each gift card code
  • Example: Suffix 2025 produces codes like ABCD1234EFGH5678-2025

Code Length

  • The length of the random portion of the code (excluding prefix and suffix)
  • Range: 8 to 20 characters
  • Default: 16 characters
  • Longer codes are more secure but harder to type manually

Expiration Date

  • Set an expiration date that applies to all gift cards in the batch
  • Cards will become invalid after this date
  • Optional: leave blank for gift cards that never expire

Note

  • An internal note or description for the job
  • Useful for tracking the purpose of each batch
  • Not visible to customers

Code Structure​

Gift card codes are generated with a random alphanumeric string. The final code structure depends on your settings:

Code Formatter (Basic+)​

On Basic plans and above, you can add custom separators to your gift card codes for improved readability. For example:

  • ABCD1234EFGH5678 becomes ABCD-1234-EFGH-5678

The formatter adds separators at regular intervals, making codes easier to read and type.

Email Delivery (Basic+)​

On Basic plans and above, you can send gift card codes directly to customers via email.

Setting Up Email Delivery​

  1. Enable email delivery when creating a job
  2. Enter the recipient email addresses
  3. Customize the email message
  4. Optionally schedule a delivery date and time

Scheduling​

  • Choose a specific date and time for email delivery
  • Select the appropriate timezone
  • Emails will be queued and sent at the scheduled time
  • Useful for coordinating gift card distribution with promotions or events

Job Presets (Premium+)​

On Premium plans and above, you can save frequently used job configurations as presets.

Saving a Preset​

  1. Configure your job settings as desired
  2. Check the Save as Preset option
  3. Give the preset a descriptive name
  4. The preset will be available for future jobs

Using a Preset​

  1. When creating a new job, select a saved preset
  2. All settings from the preset will be applied automatically
  3. You can still modify individual settings before creating the job

  • Ensure consistency across similar batches
  • Quickly set up common job types

Best Practices​

Naming Conventions​

Use descriptive notes to make jobs easy to identify later:

  • Include the purpose: "Holiday Promotion 2025"
  • Include the recipient group: "VIP Customer Rewards"
  • Include the event: "Black Friday Giveaway"

Code Format​

  • Use prefixes to categorize batches (e.g., HDAY for holiday, PRMO for promotions)
  • Use suffixes for date or batch identification
  • Choose longer code lengths for high-value cards for added security

Expiration Dates​

  • Set expiration dates for promotional gift cards
  • Leave cards without expiration for loyalty rewards or purchased gift cards
  • Check local regulations regarding gift card expiration requirements
